A DNS resolver for Europe, run by users.
Free & Open DNS is a public, encrypted DNS resolver that is non-commercial, open, and privacy first. We do not log your queries, we do not filter your internet, and no company owns us.
- DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) address
https://dns.freeandopendns.eu/dns-query- DNS-over-TLS (DoT) hostname, port 853
dns.freeandopendns.eu
Works over IPv4 and IPv6. Plain, unencrypted DNS on port 53 is intentionally not offered.
Firefox
Settings → Privacy & Security → DNS over HTTPS → choose Custom → paste the DoH address above.
Android 9 or newer
Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS → Private DNS provider hostname → enter dns.freeandopendns.eu.
Other browsers, routers and systems
Any software that supports DoH or DoT can use the addresses above. Look for “custom DNS provider”, “secure DNS” or “DNS over TLS” in its network settings.
Why use it
Almost every lookup you make goes through a handful of very large companies. We offer a different kind of public utility.
Privacy first
No query logs and no client IP logs written to disk. Our policy is public, short, and written to be checked.
Non-commercial
No ads, no data sales, no premium tier. Costs are covered by donations, and nothing is built to make a profit.
Run by a collaboration
Operated by a group of volunteers, not a corporation or a government agency. No single owner can quietly change the rules.
Open by design
Built entirely on free software (Unbound and dnsdist). Our full configuration is public (see it here) so anyone can inspect it, copy it or run their own.
Unfiltered
Pure recursive resolution. We do not block, rewrite or redirect domains. If we ever offer filtering, it will be a separate, opt-in address.
Secure
DNSSEC validation, TLS 1.3, and query-name minimisation, so upstream servers learn only what they need.
European
Hosted in the EU and subject to GDPR, independent of the large US platforms that handle most public DNS today.
Where we fit
Other European public resolvers exist, including ones backed by EU institutions. We complement them rather than compete: we are community-run, unfiltered by default and fully open. Choose what fits you. The more independent resolvers there are, the healthier the internet is.
Goals and roadmap
Our aim is an independent, European, community-run resolver network, with servers in most EU countries.
Speed matters for DNS: every web page starts with lookups, so a resolver far away feels slow. Servers across the EU will keep response times low for everyone and make the service resilient if one site fails.
- Now: one server in Bulgaria running DoH and DoT with DNSSEC, rate limiting and no query logging. The full configuration is public.
- Next: add monitoring and a public status page, and publish a transparency statement each year.
- Then: add servers in more EU countries with shared addressing (anycast or equivalent) so users reach the nearest one automatically.
- Exploring: an optional filtered address for malware and ad blocking, and Oblivious DoH, which hides your IP address from the resolver itself.
- Long term: a legally established non-profit, with open membership for operators and contributors.

Privacy policy
Last updated: 14 October 2026. We keep this policy short on purpose.
| We do not store | The domain names you look up, your IP address, or which client asked what. Query logging is switched off in both Unbound and dnsdist. |
|---|---|
| Only in memory | While a connection is open, its IP address exists in the server’s memory, which is unavoidable. Short-lived counters per IP address enforce a rate limit against abuse. These are never written to disk and disappear on restart. |
| We do not use | Cookies, analytics, trackers or advertising. This website loads no external scripts, fonts or images. |
| Hosting | The server is rented from VPS.BG in Bulgaria. Like any host, it can see network-level traffic to the server, but not the contents of encrypted queries. |
| Upstream | To answer a query we ask the internet’s authoritative DNS servers directly, not a third-party resolver. They see our server’s address, not yours. |
| Legal requests | If an authority asks for user data, we have none to give. We will say so, and we will publish any such request unless the law forbids it. |
| Your rights | Because we hold no personal data about users, there is nothing to access or delete. Questions: contact@freeandopendns.eu. |
We may add anonymous aggregate statistics, such as total query counts, with no per-user data. Any change to this policy will be published here with a new date.
Support the project
This is a non-profit effort. Donations pay for servers, monitoring, a domain and the legal setup of a European non-profit. Any surplus goes towards new servers in new countries. We report our costs openly.
Until that entity exists, donations go to a personal account of one of the operators and are used only for project costs.
You can help without money: Review our configuration, run a server, tell people about it.
Our configuration: the exact files our server runs.
Contact and abuse
General questions, offers to help: contact@freeandopendns.eu
Abuse reports: abuse@freeandopendns.eu. We aim to reply within 72 hours.
A DNS resolver only answers lookups and does not host content, so we cannot remove websites. For content problems, contact the website’s host or registrar. We do act on abuse of the resolver itself, such as floods or attempts to use it for attacks, by rate limiting or blocking the offending addresses.
